It's been a (hot!) minute since I've put my attention to a blog post, but I'm back with a timely reminder about enjoying the summer months, not feeling guilty for indulgences, and making choices that don't entirely derail your health goals! Summer is a time for a more carefree approach to your days but it does not need to mean a total departure from your healthy habits. Let's all commit to being kind to our minds, our bodies and our commitments!
As these warm summer days roll in, it's time to embrace the season with a bright smile, a pair of sunnies, and a commitment to staying healthy. However, this doesn't mean you have to lock yourself indoors or stick to a strict diet and exercise regimen. With a little planning and mindfulness, you can strike a very achievable balance between taking care of your health and enjoying all the delights, treats and spontaneous outings that summer has to offer. Here are some tips to help you stay healthy over the summer while still having a blast:
1. Stay Hydrated:
You all must know how I feel about water intake by now! Hydration is key in the summer months, especially with the heat and outdoor activities leading to increased sweating. Make sure that you drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated and energized. Infuse your water with fresh fruits or herbs or my personal favourite - Arbonne EnergyFizz Sticks! These are a tasty way to mix things up, keep your water intake interesting and stay refreshed throughout the extra long, hot days of summer. Not only will you feel better but you will find yourself eating less (thirst is very often masked as hunger), your skin will be happy and you will actually have a better sleep cycle as your body will be in harmony!
2. Eat Fresh, Light & Local!
Take advantage of the season's bounty by incorporating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet. We are blessed to have so many local food growers around us, and even available at some of our grocery stores. Seeking out local markets not only supports the local economy but gives you more nutrients packed in your meals than if you chose foods that had to travel far. Enjoy salads, smoothies, and grilled veggies to keep your meals light and nutritious. Opting for seasonal produce, which is more flavourful and nutrient-rich also keeps our meals interesting and diverse from season to season.
3. Get Moving Outdoors:
Summer is the perfect time to take your workouts outdoors. Whether it's a morning run, a bike ride, a swim at the beach, or a hike in nature, there are countless ways to stay active and soak up some vitamin D. Exercising outdoors not only boosts your mood but also provides a change of scenery from the gym. And you can still bring your computer, tablet or phone outside to carry on in your Dart Fit workouts all season long! Fresh air naturally invigorates our senses, wakes us up in the mornings and might even make your workouts seem quicker with the change of scenery!
4. Practice Sun Safety:
While soaking up the sun is enjoyable, it's crucial to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Wear sunscreen with a high SPF, reapply it regularly, seek shade during peak sun hours, and don sunglasses and a hat for added protection. Remember, a golden tan is not worth the risk of skin damage and premature aging. If you’re looking for a healthy, mineral based sunscreen check out Arbonne’s high performing FunSun Broad Spectrum SPF 30.
5. Indulge Mindfully:
Summer often brings tempting treats like ice cream, BBQs, and refreshing cocktails. While it's okay to indulge, do so mindfully. Practice portion control, savour your treats by slowing down your eating and drinking, and opt for healthier alternatives when possible. Homemade fruit popsicles, grilled kebabs, and mocktails are delicious options that won't derail your health goals.
6. Prioritize Rest and Relaxation:
Amidst all the summer activities, don't forget to prioritize rest and relaxation. Ensure you get an adequate amount of sleep each night to rejuvenate your body and mind. Schedule downtime for activities like reading a book, meditating, or enjoying a leisurely evening stroll.
Staying healthy over the summer months while still enjoying yourself is entirely achievable with a balanced approach. By adopting healthy habits such as staying hydrated, eating fresh foods, exercising outdoors, practicing sun safety, indulging mindfully, and prioritizing rest, you can make the most of the season while taking care of your well-being. Remember, summer is a time to relish the sunshine, spend time with loved ones, and create lasting memories – all while nurturing your body and soul.
Cheers to a vibrant and healthful summer ahead!
